Supporting credible witness reporting through a mobile-first incident documentation platform for the Australian public.
The University of Sydney set out to translate leading forensic psychology research into a practical digital solution that could help victims and witnesses preserve accurate records of incidents soon after they occurred. To succeed, the platform needed to do more than capture information. It had to support evidentiary credibility, align as closely as possible with court admissibility expectations, and be practical enough to assist real police investigations. The challenge was to bring together academic rigour, legal insight, and frontline usability in a single, scalable mobile solution for the Australian public.
We created iWitnessed, a mobile-first platform developed in collaboration with leading Australian cognitive scientists, legal experts, and police to help victims and witnesses record information in a structured, credible, and accessible way. Designed to support the full workflow of incident documentation, from guided recall and evidence capture through to report generation and secure sharing, the solution translated expert methodology into a practical digital tool for real-world use. More than a simple reporting app, iWitnessed was built as a scalable, enterprise-grade solution that strengthened the quality, consistency, and usability of witness records, supporting investigations, court processes, and broader justice outcomes. The launch of iWitnessed attracted national media coverage, including SBS News, ABC triple j Hack, and The Canberra Times.
"We were very pleased with how iWitnessed was brought to life as a digital solution. The project was handled with a clear understanding of the importance of the work, and the end result felt both credible and practical. It gave us a meaningful way to extend our research into a form that could have real public value."
